From the Desk of Ted Ray

With Cold and Flu Season just around the corner, it's time to start thinking about how to best  protect your health. Ideally you'll avoid catching cold, but this is very unlikely. So, you'd better have a Plan B. When I get sick, it's rarely for more than three days and I NEVER have residual symptoms. No bronchitis. No sinus infections. Nothing. How is this possible you ask? You guessed it, Chinese herbs and self-treatment with acupuncture (don't try this at home).

Here's the secret to treating colds & flus: Address the current symptoms and prevent the pathogens from going deeper into the body. If you do that, you can usually prevent it from turning into a respiratory or sinus infection. But if it does, I've got natural herbs for that too. I recommend you use Ground Support or Cold & Flu Preventative Formula to stay healthy. I look forward to seeing you this winter.

Acupuncture for Depression

I know that depression affects many people during the winter, but there are effective treatments for it. The NIH has approved acupuncture for depression, and here's a simplified Traditional Chinese Medicine explanation as to why it works: acupuncture allows the body to move stagnant qi (chee) that puts it out of balance. I usually tell patients the Western perspective too: acupuncture produces endorphins and improves circulation to body as a whole. Acupuncture also works to support brain chemistry. I like to think of it as the safer, gentler alternative, and studies have shown a 70% success rate for treating mild depression. If you'd like to explore options for depression treatment, I'm here to help. Contact Peninsula Acupuncture to see why acupuncture might be right for you.

Herbal Spotlight: St. John's Wort

While everyone's body is different, St John's Wort has been shown to offer natural anti-depressant effects for many people. As with all anti-depressants, it should be used cautiously and monitored slowly, but St. John's Wort has proven effective enough to be commonly prescribed in some countries for milder forms of depression. It's side effects are generally much milder than most prescription anti-depressants.

St. John's Wort also offers a number of other benefits which could touch on mood issues, including relief of tension headaches, anxiety treatment, and sleep disorders. Not sure if St. John's Wort could help you? Contact me at Peninsula Acupuncture, I'd be happy to discuss the pros and cons of St. John's Wort with you.
