From the Desk of Ted Ray
I know you’re excited about Spring, but hold your horses. Please allow me to offer my glass half-empty commentary. These early months bring lots of rain and dampness; wreaking havoc on injured knees and unruly sinuses. The condition of ‘dampness’ is actually defined as a pathogen in Chinese Medicine and is responsible for stubborn or intransigent conditions such as chronic sinusitis, arthritis, headaches, indigestion and recurrent colds. Who knew?
Now the glass half-full response: You have at your disposal an excellent acupuncturist and herbalist who can help you address these stubborn conditions. I encourage you to address these issues before they end up keeping you inside in March, instead of outside enjoying the (soon to be) good weather. Call me with your questions or to schedule an in-office appointment.

Fighting Insomnia with Acupuncture
Insomnia comes in all shapes in sizes and so do its causes. Common causes include, financial worries, being overloaded at work, and trying to keep on top of a busy household. Insomnia can also be related to other health issues (also known as secondary insomnia) such as pain, GI issues, and depression. The good news is that acupuncture can help you get some rest.
Acupuncture offers relief for these specific issues. For example, acupuncture can address chronic pain in insomnia-sufferers by releasing endorphins and other neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Similarly, endorphin release, along with increased circulation, can alleviate the stress and anxiety that causes the insomnia in the first place. Finally, issues like sleep apnea or liver toxicity can impair a healthy sleep cycle.
By getting to the root cause of your insomnia, we can help you get back to a regular sleep rhythm, which will in turn provide positive benefits for your physical and emotional well-being.
Herbal Spotlight: Milk Thistle
An overworked liver creates a variety of health issues, including headaches, constipation, weight gain, and even depression. Herbal treatments can protect the liver, while helping it process toxins such as caffeine, sugar, and alcohol. In these situations, I sometimes prescribe milk thistle as a way to restore a healthy liver.
Milk thistle is composed of approximately 65% silymarin, an anti-oxidant compound that a 2003 Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology showed to be effective in high dosages for certain liver issues. Regularly prescribed in Germany for liver conditions, milk thistle can both protect and enhance liver function, preventing entry of toxins while accelerating the regeneration of damaged liver cells. It also has been known to lower cholesterol.
Milk thistle isn't appropriate for every situation, however. As it is closely related to common allergy-inducers like ragweed, milk thistle can provoke allergic reactions in some people. Because of milk thistle's cell-proliferant qualities, it is contraindicated for liver cancer patients and in general, pregnant and lactating women should avoid milk thistle as well.
Milk thistle is just one of the hundreds of herbs I offer my patients in herbal formulas custom-designed to meet their specific health needs.
